Description of Ride: This is a beauty and should be done in the later part of July on a hot day. The entire ride is in the Cascade Mountains and though the most beautiful forest. The roads are twisty and require lots of attention, so if you plan on doing this in 12 hours, you need to ride and focus on the road. If done in two days, you can leisurely take in the sites, which include waterfalls, lava beds, rivers, streams and lakes as well as the mountains you are passing through. Did I say Camping? Pick from any number of campsites and spend a number of days. Go fishing and ride these roads a couple of times. The ride incorporates one of the most popular motorcycle roads out of Portland, Hwy 224, and Estacada to Detroit. From Detroit one will make a clean shot down Hwy 22 and Hwy 126 to one of the all time greatest roads in Oregon FR-19 that runs by Cougar Dam. A turn around in West Fir or Oakridge and you return on the same road until you reach Hwy 242 where you will wind through the Old McKenzie Pass and the Lava Beds to Sisters. You have now completed two of the Top 20 Twisty Roads on our list. From Sisters it is basically back up Hwy 22 and Hwy 224 to Portland. Enjoy the cooler air, shade, rivers, smell of the Forest and campfires.. |

The Aufderheide 29 miles south of where OR 126 leaves US 20 is the turn off to FR 19. Shortly after you turn off of 126. Make a right following the sign to Oakridge. If you like twisties, this is probably the best kept secret in Western Oregon. The corners are tight, plentiful and for the most part the road is in good condition. There are no services, but there are several Forrest Service campgrounds and a hot spring along the way. |
