OREGON'S OLDEST AMA CHARTERED ROAD CLUB

Kicking around Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson
by Bob Anundson
Not far from Portland are a couple of very nice rides. One takes you down the space between Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson. Take Hwy 26 past Government Camp and continuing towards Madras. You'll pass a Chevron Station on the left and a few miles later you will see a sign on the right to Timothy Lake. That is Forest Road 42. Follow that road past Timothy Lake toward Olallie Lake. Eventually you will see a road marker for 4210 and it is the only paved option. Take it. This will be primarily a single lane road so be careful, a pickup is likely to be coming the other way. 4210 intersects Forest Road 46 which is relatively wide and pleasant. Making a left takes you to Detriot. Making a right takes you back to Estacada.
The road to Estacada was damaged severly three years ago and is still being repaired. It is reportably passable but the signs might indicate differently. At the junction of 46 and 57 there is a ranger station. Check with them. You might be able to take 57 phasing into 5810 to return to Timothy Lake.

OR 224 South of Estacada to Detroit

This road rivals Lolo Pass and it is much closer to home! Miles of easy sweepers, little traffic and fairly decent pavement. It does get more technical as you approach Detroit but overall it has all the characteristics of US 12 over Lolo Pass and is much easier to reach from The Rose City.
